Disaster can strike at any time, regardless of what part of the world you are in. It cannot be stated enough the importance of always being prepared. One of the ways you can prepare ahead of time is by putting together an Emergency Preparedness Kit for your home. An emergency preparedness kit is relatively easy and inexpensive to put together, but in times of disaster, can potentially save you and your family’s life. Don’t you think it’s worth the investment? A solid Emergency Preparedness Kit should be able to allow you and your family to survive on your own after an emergency for several days.
Essentials For an Emergency Preparedness Kit
- Water – You should have enough water for drinking and sanitation purposes to last you at least three days. Therfore, it’s recommended to store a least three gallons of water per person in your family.
- Food – Make sure to pack enough food to last three days for each person in your family
- Battery-powered or hand crank radio – these are small radios that need neither batteries nor an outlet in order to play music.
- NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert – this is important because the NOAA Weather Radio is a nationwide network of radio stations that broadcasts continuous weather information directly from the nearest National Weather Service office
- A Flashlight

- First Aid Kit
- Extra Batteries
- Whistle – This may be a curious item to include. However, you will want to keep a whistle around to signal for help just in case you are buried under any debris or rubble and are out of sight from rescue teams or first responders
- Dust Mask – A dust mask will help to filter any contaminated air
- Personal Sanitation Items – These can include feminine supplies and personal hygiene items
- Manual Can Opener – For any can food items in your kit
- Prescription/Non-Prescription Medications – any pain medications or
- Extra Cash
- Any copies of important family documents
- Extra Clothes
- Matches in a Waterproof Container
While definitely not a comprehensive list, these items can provide foundation for your emergency kit. You may also want to adjust based on your individual needs.
How to Maintain Your Emergency Preparedness Kit
Keep in mind that it’s not enough to put the Emergency Preparedness Kit together. You’ll also want to make sure that you keep your emergency preparedness kit well maintained and remember to check on it frequently so that it is ready when needed. Make sure that your kit is kept in a cool, dry place for any canned or non-perishable foods that are packed with your emergency preparedness kit. One of the things I suggest is to put on your calendar a reminder to check on your kit every year. I personally like to use a Google Calendar to remind me when it’s time to do so, but feel free to use any tool, either written or digital, that can help you stay organized. You’ll want to make sure you replace any expired items as needed when you check on your kit and make any updates or changes to your kit as your family needs change.
Other Things to Keep in Mind
It’s important to keep in mind which disasters are most likely to affect your area. Some parts of the country are more susceptible to a particular national disaster than others, and can determine what supplies you will need to keep your emergency preparedness kit. These different disasters may also dictate whether supplies for an evacuation or shelter is more likely. It’s important to also factor the needs of any pets, senior, or children you have in your family as each will may require special items to be included in your emergency preparedness kit.
In addition, it’s not enough to just have an emergency preparedness kit ready. You will also want to develop a plan and any special assistance you may need. Any disabilities or routine treatments or medications need to be factored in as well. There’s definitely a lot to consider when putting together an emergency preparedness kit, and as much as we’d like, we may not be able to be completely be prepared. However, by putting together even just a fraction of what you may need should a disaster strike and by having a plan, you can dramatically increase you and your family’s chances.
